Top 3 Tips for Buying in the City

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

If you want to live in a downtown area – it’s because you LOVE the city life. But, since every big city has its own districts, city taxes, fees, and parking restrictions, how can you be sure you're making the perfect decision?

Better With Bethany's 3 tips for buying in the city will put your mind at ease.

1. Location, location, location.

NUMERO UNO.   Location, location, location.  Have I said location enough? I might say it again, it's just that important.

IF you're considering living in a downtown area, you LOVE city life. How do you choose exactly where to purchase? Every big city has smaller defined areas or districts: art, business, developed, and developing spots.

Which spots speak to you?

Which ones give you that feeling… You know, that one feeling that makes you want to live in the city?

If you're unsure, then explore! Go to restaurants, bars, speakeasys, art spots, parks - everything! Figure out exactly what you want to be close to, what's most important for you and your family (or your dog, no judgement).

The main benefit to living downtown is walking to things you love. Take your time and choose wisely.

2. City Taxes and Fees

Are you already snoozing because this topic is so boring? Yeah, I know... but it's so important. #adulting am I right?

Some cities have city taxes and this can make a big difference in your bottom line! Make sure your mortgage lender is considering all the taxes for that area when advising on your final payments.

There are areas that offer incentives for buyers. In fact, Detroit has zones which give a tax break for a certain amount of years when you buy. Click HERE for more info.

3. Parking and Car FUN

While some cities have amazing public transportation where residents don't even own a car, other cities are still lacking a little (ahem…the D).

Downtown parking can be a royal pain, so make sure you research the parking situation at any place you're considering as your home. Purchasing parking can be thousands of dollars for one spot.

Lastly, find out what your options are for additional parking if you know you'll have guests or even other tenants if you're planning on renting out a room.

With these three tips you'll more prepared than ever to find that perfect city home, condo, or apartment. When you're ready to buy, I'm ready to help you secure that perfect spot.

Thanks again for all your love and support! If there is anything you'd like to hear about in my next blog, leave a comment! As always - I will keep working hard for you!

All the love,

Bethany
